Reliance Industries is taking a giant leap in artificial intelligence (AI) by planning to establish the world’s largest AI-powered data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This ambitious project, backed by an investment of $30 billion, is set to revolutionize India’s AI infrastructure and solidify the country’s position in the global AI landscape.

A Global Collaboration

Reliance has partnered with NVIDIA, a global leader in AI technology, to bring advanced computing capabilities to India. NVIDIA will provide its state-of-the-art Blackwell AI processors, known for their ability to handle large-scale AI workloads efficiently. The collaboration will also establish an innovation center in India, leveraging NVIDIA’s expertise in accelerated computing and AI tools.

Transforming India’s AI Ecosystem

The Jamnagar facility will have a massive capacity of three gigawatts, making it significantly larger than Microsoft’s 600-megawatt data center in Virginia, currently the world’s largest. The center will play a pivotal role in processing and storing India’s vast amounts of data, which remain largely untapped despite the country’s rapid digitization.

To ensure sustainability, the facility will be powered by renewable energy from a nearby green energy complex that integrates solar, wind, and hydrogen power.

India’s AI Push: A National Priority

India currently lags behind global leaders in AI infrastructure, with the United States hosting nearly 45% of the world’s data centers as of March 2024. However, initiatives like Reliance’s Jamnagar project and government support are set to change this.

The Indian government has committed over ₹10,000 crore over five years to promote AI development, funding startups, building large language models (LLMs), and supporting research projects. According to NASSCOM, AI could contribute $500 billion to India’s GDP by 2025, and Reliance’s data center is poised to be a cornerstone of this growth.

A Vision for India’s AI Leadership

At the NVIDIA AI Summit 2024, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, and Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, emphasized India’s potential to lead the AI revolution. Ambani highlighted Reliance Jio’s role as the largest data provider globally, offering data at just $0.15 per GB compared to $5 per GB in the United States. This affordable data ecosystem, combined with NVIDIA’s cutting-edge technology, positions the Jamnagar data center as a game-changer for India’s AI ambitions.

The Road Ahead

Reliance Industries’ decision to build this landmark data center reflects India’s growing ambition to become a global AI leader. With strategic partnerships, government support, and cutting-edge technology, the Jamnagar facility is set to be the epicenter of India’s AI revolution.
