Security has been tightened outside the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) office in South Mumbai after a threatening phone call on Saturday from an individual claiming to represent the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba. He threatened to blow up the central bank with a bomb.
The Mumbai Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) based on a complaint by Sachin Gosavi, a security guard stationed at the RBI office, and have launched an investigation into the matter.
Details of the Threat
At approximately 11:00 AM on Saturday, the RBI’s customer care center inside the building received a call from an unknown mobile number. The caller identified himself as the “CEO of Lashkar-e-Taiba” and issued a threat, saying: “Bank band kar do! (Shut the bank) electric car crash.” According to Truecaller, the caller’s number was saved under the name “Sanjeev Kumar.”
The call came on the helpline number around 11 am on Saturday and he threatened to blow up the central bank with a bomb, they said. He said he was the “CEO” of the banned group and sang a song over the phone before issuing the threat, sources said.
The customer care staff promptly alerted their supervisor and security in charge, who then informed the Mumbai Police control room. Both local police and the crime branch have initiated parallel investigations. While authorities suspect the call may have been a hoax—especially as the caller reportedly sang a song after issuing the threat—they are not taking any chances.
Legal Action Taken
The police have registered a case against the mobile number user under Sections 351(3), 351(4), 353(1)(E), and 353(2) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), according to an official statement. The investigation is ongoing, with security measures heightened around the RBI premises to ensure safety.
