RBI directs Banks to remain open on 31 March

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a directive to all agency banks, instructing them to keep all their branches dealing with government receipts and payments open for transactions on 31 March, 2024. This decision comes after the Government of India made a request to ensure that all branches involved in government business remain operational on this specific day.

The primary reason behind this directive is to account for all the government transactions relating to receipts and payments within the fiscal year 2023-24 itself. By keeping the branches open on 31 March, which happens to be a Sunday in 2024, the government aims to accurately record and reconcile all financial activities associated with the fiscal year.

By adhering to this directive, agency banks will play a crucial role in facilitating the smooth processing of government-related transactions. It will also ensure that the financial activities of the government are completed in a timely manner, avoiding any delays or discrepancies.

The RBI’s directive serves as a reminder to all agency banks about the importance of maintaining operational efficiency and transparency in government transactions. By keeping their branches open on 31 March, agency banks will enable the government to effectively account for all the receipts and payments made during the fiscal year 2023-24.

It is worth noting that this directive specifically applies to agency banks that handle government business. Non-agency banks and branches involved in non-government transactions are not required to remain open on this day.

In conclusion, the RBI’s directive to keep agency bank branches open on 31 March, 2024, reflects the government’s commitment to accurate accounting and timely completion of financial activities. By following this directive, agency banks will contribute to the smooth functioning of government transactions and help ensure the efficient management of the country’s finances.
