In a heart-wrenching incident from Haryana, a 26-year-old deputy bank manager lost his life while trying to save his younger brother from drowning in a canal. The tragic event occurred near the Hansi Branch Canal of Moonak Head in Karnal district on June 1. Today, the elder brother’s body was recovered near Rohtak, about 161 kilometers away from where he jumped in.
What Happened at the Canal
On June 1, Mukul, a 23-year-old air conditioner (AC) mechanic from Mangalpur village in Karnal, slipped and fell into the Hansi Branch Canal. His elder brother Vishal, who worked as a deputy manager in a bank, immediately jumped in to save him.
According to their father Ramniwas, Mukul had gone to Moonak village that day for AC repair work. Later, he called his father from near the canal and said something that alarmed him. He reportedly said, “You may be hearing my voice for the last time.” Hearing this, Ramniwas panicked and quickly informed Vishal, who was in Karnal at the time.
Vishal rushed to the canal with some friends. Ramniwas also contacted his brother Sompal, who was already near the area. When they reached the canal, they saw Mukul sitting alone near the water. Mukul seemed upset, and when the family approached him, he tried to avoid them. Unfortunately, his foot slipped on the wet mud near the canal, and he fell into the water.
Vishal’s Brave Attempt to Save His Brother
Seeing Mukul fall, Vishal didn’t waste a second and jumped into the canal with his clothes on. Reports say that Vishal managed to catch hold of Mukul, and both tried to stay afloat. But tragically, neither of them knew how to swim, and the canal’s strong current swept them away.
Other family members, including their uncle Sompal and cousin Shubham, also jumped into the water in an effort to help, but they, too, did not know how to swim. Somehow, they managed to come out safely, but Vishal and Mukul disappeared under the water.
Search Operation and Recovery
Soon after the incident, the police from Moonak and Ballah started an investigation. Search operations were launched with help from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Divers searched the canal along a 10–15 km stretch, but for two days, there was no sign of either brother.
On June 3, Vishal’s body was finally recovered near Bainsi canal bridge in Rohtak by Lakhan Majra police. He was wearing only undergarments, though he had jumped into the canal wearing a T-shirt and lowers. His body had traveled a long distance due to the force of the water.
Sadly, the younger brother Mukul is still missing. Search teams, including professional divers, are continuing efforts to locate him.
Family’s Pain and Background
Vishal and Mukul belonged to a simple and hardworking family. Their father, Ramniwas, works in AC servicing along with his middle son, Sahil. Vishal was married and had a one-and-a-half-year-old son. Sahil is also married and has a child. Their mother passed away around ten years ago. The father said he ensured his older sons were married early so the household could be stable, especially after the loss of his wife.
Mukul had been working as an AC repair technician for the past three years and was expected to get married next year.
The entire village is mourning the loss of Vishal, who died while trying to save his brother. The family is devastated and is still hoping to find Mukul.
