Bank Officers’ Safety: AIBOC Maharashtra Meets Deputy Chief Ministers Over Recents Attacks on Bankers in Maharashtra

In light of recent incidents where bank officers in Maharashtra were verbally abused or even physically assaulted due to language-related misunderstandings, the All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), Maharashtra State has taken immediate action. A delegation from the organization met with Deputy Chief Ministers Shri Eknath Shinde and Shri Ajit Pawar to express their serious concerns and demand immediate steps to prevent such events in the future. The delegation was led by Comrade Nilesh Pawar, Secretary of AIBOC Maharashtra. He was accompanied by President Com. Manoj Wadnerkar and senior committee members including Com. Padmakar Talvadekar, Com. Pramod Shinde, Com. Yogesh Godge, and Com. Gaurav Kadam. During the meeting, the delegation submitted a strongly worded appeal, stating that the safety of bank officers cannot be compromised under any circumstances. Com. Nilesh Pawar clearly stated that bankers, regardless of their position or location, must be able to work without fear, threats, or hostility. The officers demanded that the government not only act immediately but also implement long-term safety measures to prevent such issues. The AIBOC team highlighted the important role that bank officers play in running various government schemes. For example, they are directly involved in implementing the Ladki Bahin Yojana and other financial welfare programs, even in remote and rural parts of Maharashtra. When bank officers are threatened or mistreated, their morale is affected, and this in turn harms the smooth execution of such government initiatives. The delegation emphasized that this is not just a matter of individual safety—it affects public service delivery at large.
In response, both Deputy Chief Ministers assured the delegation that the government takes the matter seriously. They stated that no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands. They acknowledged the contribution of bankers in delivering services and government benefits at the grassroots level and promised to ensure a safe and respectful working environment for them. They informed the delegation that police departments across the state have already been instructed to respond quickly and sensitively to any threats or violence against bank staff. The leaders also mentioned that the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) will be directed to prepare new guidelines focused on improving safety and promoting respectful behavior within bank branches. However, they also stressed that while the government is committed to protecting bank officers, it is equally important for banking staff to treat every customer with politeness and respect, especially in a linguistically diverse state like Maharashtra.
One of the key topics of discussion was the implementation of the Trilingual Policy. The Deputy Chief Ministers reiterated that this policy is essential and must be followed strictly. They urged banks to ensure the respectful use of Marathi along with Hindi and English in all customer interactions. According to them, using the local language shows cultural respect and helps build trust between banks and the communities they serve. AIBOC Maharashtra fully supported this view and stated that adopting the local language is not just a rule—it is a mark of respect. It helps avoid unnecessary conflict and improves communication with customers. They appealed to all bank officers across the state to embrace this approach in their daily work.
The meeting ended on a hopeful note, with AIBOC expressing trust in the government’s assurances. However, the leaders of AIBOC also made it clear that they now expect concrete action to follow. They stressed that ensuring a safe, respectful, and dignified working environment for bank officers is not just a demand—it is a shared responsibility of the government and the banking community.
