A case of ATM card fraud has surfaced in Gwalior, where scammers swapped the ATM card of a retired Jiwaji University employee under the pretext of offering help and withdrew ₹40,000 from his account.
The scammers left only ₹1,200 in the victim’s account. The incident occurred at an SBI ATM near Urvai Gate in the Bahodapur police station area. After realizing the fraud, the victim reported the matter to the police, who registered a case on Wednesday.
Details of the Incident:
The victim, Meharban Khan (62), a retired Jiwaji University employee, lives near Syed Wali Dargah on Koteshwar Road in Bahodapur. He has an account at the Central Bank of India’s Jiwaji University branch. On Tuesday, he visited the SBI ATM at Urvai Gate to withdraw ₹4,000 for household expenses.
At the ATM, a young man was already present. When Meharban entered, the man followed him inside. Shortly after, a third person also entered the ATM. When Meharban’s attempts to withdraw cash failed, one of the young men offered assistance, claiming he was using the machine incorrectly. The second man also joined in to “help.” During this time, they noted his ATM PIN and discreetly swapped his card.
The scammers left the ATM soon after. Moments later, Meharban began receiving withdrawal notifications on his mobile phone. By the time ₹40,000 had been withdrawn, the messages stopped. Realizing he had been duped, Meharban rushed to the bank to block his card.
With only ₹1,200 remaining in his account, he then reported the incident to the Bahodapur police, who have since registered a case and begun an investigation.
